Representation That Understands Your Family's Needs

LGBTQ+ family law matters carry legal nuances that not every attorney is prepared to handle. Whether you are going through a same-sex divorce, working through a custody dispute, or taking steps to protect your parental relationship, you need an attorney who understands both Maryland law and the specific factors that affect LGBTQ+ families.

At Law Office of Shelly Maynard Ingram, we have represented LGBTQ+ clients across a wide range of family law matters since 2012, and you should never feel like you have to explain your family structure before getting substantive legal help.

Here is what LGBTQ+ clients can expect when working with our firm:

  • Knowledgeable representation in same-sex divorce proceedings throughout Maryland
  • Clear guidance on parental rights for non-biological and non-adoptive parents
  • Experience handling custody matters in families formed through assisted reproduction or adoption
  • Drafting and review of prenuptial and postnuptial agreements for couples at any stage
  • Representation in property division disputes involving assets accumulated before legal marriage
  • Familiarity with how prior domestic partnerships and civil unions may affect current legal proceedings

Associate Attorney Eric S. Williams identifies as queer and is passionate about this area of the law. It is our hope that this deeper understanding and compassion that comes from being a part of the queer community can help put you at ease, even when you are facing tough legal challenges. Our entire legal staff approaches every case with the same focused preparation we bring to each client, and we work to make sure your rights are clearly understood and fully protected at every stage of the process.

LGBTQ+ Divorce in Maryland

Since the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, same-sex couples have had the right to marry and divorce in all 50 states. Maryland fully recognizes same-sex marriages and applies the same divorce laws to all married couples regardless of gender or sexual orientation. The legal process for same-sex divorce follows the same framework as any other Maryland divorce.

That said, same-sex divorce can raise issues that require closer attention, particularly for couples who were in long-term relationships or domestic partnerships before legal marriage became available in Maryland in 2013.
